After a month of being in Tanzania and lots of training, I finally got on the road and went to see one of our projects in the nw of the country. Its a home horticulture, canal building and sanitation project, trying to help locals improve their health and standard of living by extending the water supply into valley, increasing the land that can be farmed, and improve hygiene and the health of the local community. Its early days but it will make such a difference to the community. Yesterday I went along to meet some villagers in their homes, all of which were mud huts and very basic dwellings. Its very humbling to see how happy, friendly and willing to learn even when they have so little. The journey there took two days and wasnt quick but luckily the scenery is so spectacular, the highlight being amazing views of Mount Kilimanjaro. I am now on my way back to Morogoro (home), this time using public transport, which is going to be interesting. This morning I spent two hours in a dalla dalla (people carrier- taxi/bus) sharing 3 seats between 4 of us! Ive been more comfortable, thats for sure. I am currently in Arusha before I head off early tomorrow for the second leg, a ten hour coach trip with just one stop. No water for me then... Ive two days back in Morogoro before heading off again to the next project. In the meantime I have lots of washing to do as everything is covered in red dust, including me. Tonights hot shower will be blissful after the open air shower we have had to use. Although I am having fun, I am missing my friends and family very much and am constantly wondering what you are all up to. Keep me posted as its so nice to hear from you.
