After a week of 40+hours spent learning and talking about the behaviors and conditions that lead to genocide — including hearing from a professor who interviewed Hutu perpetrators in Rwanda about how and why they bashed the skulls of Tutsi children against a church wall until they were dead, and from a Schindlers list Holocaust survivor who recalled how she mistook the ash falling around her for snow the day she arrived at Auschwitz— I’ve been feeling like a shell of myself…But today when I signed into my Facebook and looked through my newsfeed, I was quickly reminded of the incredible circle of critical and conscious friends Ive had the privilege to build over the years. From those behind the camera capturing important stories from people otherwise overlooked, and those in front of a computer strategizing and fundraising for nonprofits missioning to create positive change in the world, my friends who work patiently and tirelessly in the classroom, courtroom and communities most in need, and the ones who simply exude love and respect no matter what their role is…you guys remind me that at the core of everything we do is the shared belief in the dignity and capabilities of all human beings. Thank you for making me feel whole again, I got SO much love for ya’ll!! And now it’s the freakin weekend baby I’m about to have me some funnnn.
