After a week of hard work on the house, I told Kathlyn that I needed to go see some mindless movie for a bit. So we went and saw the 3D version of Hercules at the theater in Oxford. It was great fun and the audience laughed a number of times during the film. Ian McShane was simply hilarious in his part as the seer who has the vision of his own death that keeps on moving as it remains unfulfilled. He plays it with such great comedic timing and pronouncement that the audience clearly loved him most of all. Dwayne The Rock Johnson plays the part of Hercules and while he isnt anything to write home about, he also doesnt get in the way of the movie or hurt the film. Speaking of hurt, John Hurt plays a great portrayal of a king in this film and I wont give away any secrets by telling you why -- in case you wish to see it. As Joe Bob Briggs used to report long ago on The Movie Channel, there were enough buxom women to keep teenage boys captivated from start to finish. The body count was high, the gore was not overbearing but the battles were intense, the effects were great, the story and the writing brought comedy to the story, and all in all I found it far better than I expected it would be. A solid three of five stars. Not bad for a movie starring The Rock.
