After about four months of rehearsals there was a lot of Good News when Bay Port High School put on its musical this year, yes, it was called Good News. All three performances were superb. Bay Port musicals attempt to give many people a chance to shine and shine they did! You might say many of them hitched their wagon to their Lucky Star. The musical was set in 1928 on the campus of Tait College. A player touted as the best football player in the country had failed an astronomy test and the student body members were protesting to get him a chance to play in the big game. One reason this musical was chosen was to expose students and the audience to music from a different era. Good News is a show that includes wonderful songs like Button Up Your Overcoat, Youre the Cream in My Coffee, Just Imagine, Lucky in Love and many dance numbers the audience loved like the all gal number Hes a Ladies Man, the show stopping Varsity Drag and the all guy number Keep Your Sunnyside Up. Because the show is set just before the Great Depression it had a very happy feel to it. There were also some wonderful lines like My daddy has all his money in the stock market. He says in 1928 thats the safest place to have it. There was also the line “Being a football player will never be an occupation in which you can make any money. Perhaps the best thing is that so many people get to participate. Putting together the cast, crew, pit band and costume crew there were over 100 students involved with a number of them getting some nice leadership opportunities as student directors, student dance captains and student choreographers. I also would like to thank my wonderful members of the team of directors who each take so much pride in doing their part of things in a top-notch way. Michael Pufall did both the vocals and pit band. Chris Gabryszek, Greg Gabryszek and Austin Arbour worked with the technical areas - lighting, sound and building and moving set pieces, Katie Verdegan did the choreography and Jaynie Timm was the Costume Director. Jaclyn Beattie was a consultant and assistant director. Photos by Kathy Anderson
