After completing his post graduation in agriculture, Sajad, a youth from Beharampura village in Baramulla district of Jammu & Kashmir, was unable to find a job. Amidst the dejection, he heard about ISAP’s Entrepreneurship Development Program (EDP) under the ACABC scheme to help unemployed agri and allied graduates establish their own business ventures. Seeing a ray of hope, he immediately enrolled himself for the EDP at ISAP’s Srinagar centre. Simultaneously, through a market survey, he discovered that the suppliers from the neighbouring states of Punjab and Haryana are meeting most of the demand of meat in Kashmir. Straightaway, he decided to start a broiler chicken unit after completion of the training. He started by launching a poultry unit in Rafiabad, Baramulla with seed money from parents and relatives, and later expanded to other parts of the Kashmir valley. In no time, he was doing an annual turnover of more than Rs. 50 lakh, managing a net profit of Rs. 6-7 lakh. Sajad provides direct employment to about 10 persons in his farm. More than 120 farmers have received the benefit of Sajad’s advisory services. Inspired by the success of Sajad, many youths, in and around Baramulla have started poultry business. Sajad also provides advisory to small farmers and rural youth to start backyard poultry of small scale but full-fledged poultry business. More than often, ISAP Srinagar hires him as a resource person. In addition, ISAP - Srinagar sends interested trainees to his farm regularly for exposure visits and hands-on training.
