After firing over 3,000 Certifies Experienced Teachers, CPS is hiring "Safe Passage Workers" to keep the children safe. Who will teach them? Nobody, or hundreds of little Teach For America Interns looking to pay of their student loans while they experiment on your children Keep them safe and feed them. Pay parents, teens and financially deprived men and women $10.00 an hour 5 hours a day. WHAT AWAY TO DESTROY THE INFRASTRUCTURE OF OUR COMMUNITY. NO BLACK MIDDLE CLASS. JUST THE RICH AND THE POOR! Chicago Public Schools will be expanding the Safe Passage program to 51 Welcoming Schools to support our students as they transition to their new schools this fall. The successful Safe Passage program has led to a 20 percent decline in criminal incidents around Safe Passage schools, a 27 percent drop in incidents among students, and a 7 percent increase in attendance over the past two years in high schools that currently have the Safe Passage program. Expanding the Safe Passage program to include next year’s welcoming schools is one of several steps CPS is taking to create safe environments in and around our schools. Safe Passage workers are the eyes and ears of their communities and will be our partners in providing safe routes to and from school every day for students During the recent planning process, many parents and members of the community have expressed interest in applying for these positions. In all cases, interested applicants must submit to the specific vendor an employment application. CPS is not conducting the hiring. Choose what location interests you, then contact the specific vendor directly and they will be able to describe their exact hiring process. What are some of the desired qualifications? Successful candidates will typically possess the following qualifications: Very knowledgeable (or preferably a member) of the community they wish to serve Able to demonstrate a commitment to serving our students Able to demonstrate an ability to build relationships with students and de-escalate conflicts Consistent track record for being reliable and on time Able to physically stand for long periods of time and tolerate all weather conditions Able to read and write incident reports Must be able to pass CPS Background Check (Click here for a list of enumerated offenses that will not be approved.) Additional qualifications may apply for each specific vendor What are the issues that will prohibit someone from not being able to pass the CPS Background Check? Click here for a list of enumerated offenses that will not be approved. What are the hours and rate of pay for this position? All Safe Passage workers must be committed to work a total of 5 hours per day, 5 days a week. The exact start and end times will vary by school. In all cases, Safe Passage workers will need to work a split shift to support student arrival and dismissal, meaning people will be expected to work a few hours in the morning and a few hours in the afternoon. Pay is $10/hour. Will I receive training if I am hired? All Safe Passage workers will receive training before they begin working as well as ongoing support to promote a successful experience. When will all hiring be completed? All hiring is expected to be completed on or before early August so that the Safe Passage workers can complete mandatory training and be ready for the first day of school, August 26, 2013.
