After having the benefit of time to digest the news, I generally come down in favor of the lifting of the embargo. My internal Uncle Milty will typically default to open and free trade. But the conditions under which the embargo was putatively lifted yesterday demonstrate, once again, that the current administrations foreign policy is best defined as not really having a policy. It just seems completely reactive, bearing no internal cohesion, not unlike a novice cook bouncing from burner to burner to make sure each recipe doesnt go off the rails. It doesnt help that some people are being *deep theatrical breath* just... complete... douches about it. It simply does not do to tell members and families of the Cuban exile community to get over it. Its about as effective a remedy as telling an amputee to walk it off. I submit that Latin Americans of, say, Venezuelan, Bolivian, or Peronist Argentinian upbringing would be less likely to tell a Cuban exile family to get over it than, perhaps, a hipster white kid who might struggle to find most South American and Caribbean countries on a map. If I were Cuban, Id be asking for my final exams to be rescheduled... for 64 years.
