After inviting and listening to both negative and positive - TopicsExpress

After inviting and listening to both negative and positive reactions to President Obamas State of the Union address, I was struck by several people who pay no attention to that kind of stuff and dont care; dont vote anyway. Certainly that is their prerogative as free Americans: the right to vote ensures you that you also have the right to abstain. But to not pay attention EVER, and to ALWAYS abstain? I would like to ask them this : dont you have a responsibility to me also? I am a fellow American. Why does the burden of paying attention and voting fall to me simply because you cant be bothered with the complexities, or the unpleasantness, or the boredom? Doesnt that also mean you miss the stuff thats good? And dont your political blinders lead you to become a self-fulfilled prophecy: in other words, the government surely will, in the end, be allowed to do whatever they want because passivity is the ultimate gift to unscrupulous leaders. Look at any Third World country to understand the social, economical, and political ramifications of political apathy. So how can you make sure, when you decide to ignore the country around you and not participate in the world where we both live, that you are only affecting yourself? I need you to know what going on, regardless of which side of the fence you lean towards, because its too hard to go it alone.
