After involvement in a hotly contested debate on a certain Facebook page, in which 909 comments were made (at the time of my posting this) the results are in. Here is what was finally decided: First, the Constitution allows for the free practice of all religions whether we like that religion or not (conclusively settled). Second, Islam may or may not be a religion (no conclusive consensus was achieved). Third, Islam may or may not be a religion of violence (no agreement could be reached on this point). Fourth, Muslims may or may not be predisposed to violence because their religion demands it of them (again not conclusively settled). Fifth, religious practice in this country may or may not be at the consent of the Christian majority who decides to whom the First Amendment applies (not conclusively settled). Sixth, debate often ends with no clear victory for either side (the evidence speaks for itself). Seventh, Giorgio Tsoukalos loves space aliens and needs to comb his hair (conclusively settled). Eighth, ice cream is good (conclusively settled). It took 909 comments and posts to decide that we cannot agree on the issue of Islam but we can agree on ice cream. We cannot agree on the issue of what is supported by the Koran but we agree that Giorgio needs to comb his hair. We cannot agree whether or not Christians have the right to determine to whom the First Amendment applies but we agree that the Constitution supports free practice of religion. Well, I dont know about you, but I certainly feel better about the future of our country!
