After lunch with a friend at ISSI in UP, we decided to partake of dirty ice cream for desert. As we were eating it, an old lady asked the vendor if he was selling cigarettes. After hearing the old lady, I gave her a stick from my pack and asked her how she became a victim of martail law (ISSI is where the claims board holds office). She said she was a part of the la tondena strikers. I was caught completely by surprise as I had just shown at CHR the day before a short video on the la tondena strike. I got my camera and interviewed two of them for incorporation into the video. I did thus completiing the story as I did not get to interview any worker then. I also took pictures of the other ,la tondena workers who were there filing their claims. In case you dont know, the la tondena strike was the first labor strike under Martial Law. In 1975, three years after the declaration of Martal Law, the workers union in la tondena decided to hold a strike despite its prohibition under Martial Law. This strike broke the ice and several strikes followed suit leading to the ultimate downfall of the Marcos Regime in 86. Sila ang mga tunay na bayani sa pagsugpo kay Marcos! Mabuhay sila!
