After my first hundred at Oil Creek in 2012, here is my #1 piece of advice for finishing. If youre cold and tired at the aid station, just KEEP GOING. One thing about the aid stations at OC is that they are ALL down in the valleys... so you might be cold while youre there, but all of the aid stations (well, not so much with AS4) are followed by climbs. Lots of people dropped two years ago at PC (AS2) because they were cold, tired, wet, and just didnt want to move. Get some food and GET GOING, because you will be warm again within 5 minutes, I can pretty much guarantee it. All of the above is null and void if its 80º again, which is always a possibility. And actually, after my DNF in 2013 at mile 31, the same goes for hot weather.. if you feel like crap, youre tired, and unmotivated, and you simply just dont want to run anymore because its not fun, then dont DNF. Get to the next aid station.. drink a whole bunch of water, eat a whole bunch of pizza, stretch your legs, and start walking. Youll likely feel better in a little while. It was easy to say eh, Id rather just go to the Blue Canoe and drink some beer and eat some bacon burgers, but a couple weeks later, I wish I took some time to regroup and keep moving. Usually when youre having a mentally low moment (depressed, irritated, dont feel like continuing, questioning why youre doing it), its likely due to low blood sugar. Get some carbohydrates in you, and then get some more. And keep moving! Remember, you need to move at about 19 minutes per mile to finish the 100. Thats not fast. Its not about going fast, its about continuing to move. If youre walking slowly, youre still moving infinitely faster than someone sitting still. If this is your first, and your goal is simply to finish, all you need to do is hike the uphills, run the flats and downs nice and easy, and eat eat eat eat!
