After our appeal last week for a few quid to buy basic equipment to help prevent the spread of Ebola... the latest from Aliea Kamara and the project BNBS supports in Sierra Leone: On behalf of Hope Academy for Girls, Sierra Leone, I was able to bring personnel from the Education Department of the Ministry of Health, to sensitise the various communities of the 4 villages of evergreen and peaceful York on the Western area rural district on the Peninsular. This area is open to visitors from all over SL and abroad (though less now due to deadly Ebola). They have heard about Ebola but little on the deadly side and how to prevent it. We divided the 4 villages into two groups comprising one large and one small together., After the MOH Official has sensitised the communities, and had a session for questions and answers which went over the allocated time, showing how keen the people are to learn and know more. Most questions came from the youth who in both groups are in the majority. We presented to the Leaders of the communities buckets with taps, bowls to hold used solutions, boxes of chlorine and soap to always wash and keep their hands clean. We actually actually demonstrated to the audience on how to hand wash. They were excited and came forward to ask for more posters which had been given to us by MOH for distribution; they again asked how to mix the solution for the hand wash and personally expressed their gratitude individually. There was a reporter from the Peninsular local radio station in full attendance. He said he will do a CD for a small price. It was a blessed day as the rains that have been pouring non stop held its peace. During this time, as well, there were about 5 carpenters working at the school site from Freetown, putting up 19 doors and fitting them with locks while also assembling the window frames. Saturday was a very long, but one of a most fulfilling day. Thank you to all our BNBS supporters, every book you pre-order that hits its target is providing the basics we take for granted i.e. sanitation and education.
