After reading Monte Hellmans praise for the film, I just had to - TopicsExpress

After reading Monte Hellmans praise for the film, I just had to check it out. Certainly a better offering by Ridley Scott than what hes done in the last decade, though still not all there. No doubt the unconventional screenplay by Cormac McCarthy is the driving force and pretty much deserves most of the credit. Not that it doesnt have rough spots, but still a refreshing change of pace from the usual programmers, potboilers and vehicles that Hollywood spews forth. Fassbender acquits himself well, as do Brad Pitt & Javier Bardem. Bardem is a bit OTT, but not nearly as out of place as Cameron Diaz. Bad casting there, and a big blow to the narrative as a lot of it hinges on her character. Minor roles are well played, music and cinematography is fine. I have read a lot of criticism of the film, and believe that Hellmans assessment is more accurate. Personally, I thought the key to the whole film is in the scene where Bardem is showing Fassbender around a club he plans to upgrade, while telling an anecdote from his past that starts as a joke. That whole episode he recounts is the summation of the film and its place in similarly themed films, and viewers expectations from such films.
