After reading Nicholas Kristof’s column today about the “Buddhists” and the Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar nytimes/2014/06/05/opinion/kristof-theres-a-kind-of-hush.html and then today’s Op-Ed about the horrors resulting from the Indian Caste system nytimes/2014/06/05/opinion/indias-feudal-rapists.html?hp&rref=opinion it started me thinking about how we love to classify people, creating differences that take on such a tangible nature, and then hate people for being different. For instance, I hate big government, I hate paying high taxes that are the result of wasteful spending and supporting political and institutional dysfunction. I love having the social safety net and imagine single payer healthcare as logical way to cover everyone and reduce expensive redundancy. So am I left-wing or right-wing, democrat or republican? The system virtually requires categorization and then developing antipathy towards the opponents we create. My point is labeling does not work. Our obsession to “label” is the worst type of mental illness and probably the biggest killer of any mental illness. It is a disease that needs study and treatment.
