After reading the 11-Page Statutory declaration presented to the Australian government by Ex-Minister Ali Abdu, I felt compassion towards him. One can simply understand how a devastated life he leads at the moment as a result of his familys suffering under the Asmara regime. As an Eritrean citizen I feel pity towards him. But this is Ali Abdu who never flinched back from mentioning his close friendship with Taddese Teame. A man whom Ali Abdu refered as a Genius in a million. Yet Ali Abdu chose to be tight-lipped about the role he and Tadesse played in the arrest of the G-15 and in his beautifully written declaration he came out as a saint. Dan Connell in his book Conversations with Eritrean political prisoners quoted Haile Drue as saying At Embatkala meeting Ali Abdu and Tadesse were in their full force calling the government to arrest the G-15, and do it so quickly. They thought we wouldnt find out but we found out very soon that they were the cheerleaders in the meeting and they pushed the government for our arrest. Undoubtedly enough Ali Abdu played a role in the arrest of the G-15. And he was a close ally of Issaias Afeworki at that very moment. However like many others in the government probably he was misled badly. However he can not claim he is innocent. Because we know he was not. All Eritreans need is a simple I am Sorry. Last but not least, he is definitely fighting for a Political asylum. Like thousands of other Eritreans who lied in their applications in hope of getting an asylum in foreign countries, Ali could be lying too. So we should not believe what is written in his report or we should not take it at a face value. But I wish him success in his application. He does have the right to protection and refuge. Though 13 Years back he had denied our Heroes the protection they well deserved in a country they toiled and bled for.
