After secondary school, I had escaped from home to join the army. I had just turned 17. Back home, of course, the search was on for the little rascal. After two weeks of physicals at Akim barracks I returned home to get my credentials; darker, harder and dour. It was my mother I met first. She had heard about my adventure from one of my sisters friends who had sighted me during an early morning workout. As i stepped into the compound, she dropped the broom she was holding and held me in a deep gaze as I approached. And when she smiled at me I couldnt return it. Then she stepped forward, still smiling, and gently put her hands on my shoulders. Mike, anything that takes laughter from your heart is not for you. You were born to bring happiness, my dear, not sorrow She said as she gently led me into the house. Of course, that prophesy put paid to that military (mis)adventure. Happy Mothers Day to my darling mom.
