After seeing a photo of some veterans who went on the Honor Flight, It took me back to the days of World War ll when I was a young child. The memories of this time remain so vivid. I recall this as being a time of great loyalty and patriotism in the United States. We did many things to help in the cause of the war and to support out troops. We bought Defense Stamps. When we got the stamp book filled up we were overjoyed and believed we were doing something wonderful for our country. Everyone in our neighborhood had a Victory Garden. WE smashed tin cans and saved them for the weekly garbage collection. I dont know what these cans were used for. Someone said they were used to make bombs. Didnt matter how or why these cans were collected. It was for the war effort . We didnt have any bubble gum available or nylon stockings could not be purchased. (Now you hardly see women wearing nylon stockings. My how times have changed. There was a shortage of gasoline. My dad put his jalopy car up on blocks until the war was over. We all rode the bus instead of using our car. We were issued ration stamps for staple items like sugar, gas, etc etc. I believe that we were a united country that stood together. We deserved to be called The United States of America.
