After seeing the movie Doctor Zhivago (1965), John Hartford (real name “Harford”) wrote this classic in 15 minutes. Glen Campbell heard John’s version on the radio in 1967 and immediately assembled members of the famous Wrecking Crew backing musicians (Leon Russell among them) to record his own version. While making a demo of his recording, in between the phrases he sung, Glen yelled out instructions to the musicians of what he wanted to hear. Campbell then took the demo to his producer who loved it so much, he erased Glen’s ‘instructions’ without telling him. Capitol released it in July of 1967 to little fanfare. It was re-released one year later and was a huge hit with over 5 million radio plays. John Hartford died at age 62, in June, 2001. Still, one of my all-time faves! youtube/watch?v=NtiHluArFc4
