After some consultation with those in the local community, we at south Londonderry and east Tyrone UPRG will be discussing and implementing a plan for next years 12th celebrations. We have noticed a serious decline in the number of flags flying from houses in loyalist communities across our area. There are many reasons involved, ranging from disillusionment at the present situation politically to some stating they were more fervent in their show of patriotism during the troubles when we were under physical attack day and daily. These views require work to re-involve these people in their culture and identity and help them feel less alienated. But, a couple of reasons were also discussed which we can do something about with some basic hands on effort and it is our plan to sort the issue out for next year. The other reasons being, elderly and less able bodied people are unable to physically erect their flag at their property and another reason being a person may want to fly a flag but either are short of money or do not have the means to fit flag holders to their home etc. We will be putting in place a plan for next year to sort out these problems. We aim to print flyers with contact details which will be hand delivered to numerous homes across our area. People will be able to phone or email us with a request of what they need, whether that be just needing the flag put up to having a flag holder fitted and flag put up. We are willing to provide flag holders, poles and flags free of charge and will be available to fit them and take them down again suiting the householder if needed. Its a small thing but if it develops a bit of pride in our flag and identity again, it will be well worth it. Mod5.
