After the 1998 #NFL draft produced one of the greatest busts (Ryan Leaf) and success stories (Petyon Manning) in history, what have we learned about the science of evaluating human talent — on and off the field? There is little doubt in most peoples minds that #RyanLeaf had the physical talent to succeed in the NFL, much like his draft colleague #PetyonManning. However, this (in)famous story of predicting success highlights the importance of taking into account ones personality, emotional health, and ability to master those inner demons as much as physical skill and raw power. Personal triumph is dependent on many things outside our control, but that which we must always seek to master first is ourselves regardless of whatever the outside world throws at us. Deep down though, I dont any of us should pass judgement on either of these two men. Ryan Leafs and Petyon Mannings are made everyday, and we all make choices that guide us down either of those two paths. Is it really fair that Leafs name has become synonymous with missed potential and abject failure, while Peytons has become analogous to fame, triumph, and respect?
