After the birth of his first grandchild Dr James Hansen who, as a NASA scientist, had studied climate on Venus, realized that he had to apply his knowledge to the changing climate on earth. His book "Storms of my grandchildren" is a fascinating if disturbing read. There is now such an increase in environmental disasters resulting from global warming, such as record rainfall in New Brunswick, floods in Calgary, record high temperatures and increased numbers of tornadoes in the US, that it seems obvious that his warnings should be heeded. Insurance companies accept that climate change is causing more disasters, but an Alberta politician interviewed about the flooding in Alberta did not seem to think that this was connected with climate change. We still do not have the political will to do anything serious about it. Measures such as building dikes are only temporary solutions.
