After the high of meeting two of my heroes last night - Its sad news indeed to hear of the passing of another this morning. Of course Im talking about Makeup Maestro Dick Smith. I dont have a picture with him and in fact only met him once or twice when he came by the little shop space in the back of Burman Industries to visit John Caglione and Doug Drexler and see what we were doing on Dick Tracy all those years ago. So my personal connection with him is almost nothing - but there is no denying the impact and generosity the man had had on all of us in this crazy makeup effects game. Many of us wouldnt even be here at all if not for Dick opening the world of the craft up in early articles in Famous Monsters Magazine, or his Do It Yourself Monster Makeup Manual - or his Pressman Makeup Kits. He pioneered and refined to science many of the techniques that advanced the craft and was willing to take his time and patience and openly share his research and skill with anyone who seriously asked. The graciousness of the man cannot be overstated. He continued to hone and re-invent his craft endlessly tinkering to make formulas and molds and appliances better and better. He (if I may say) pioneered the self-branding that has become the bylaw of our current times. He made himself a household name and not by shameless braggadocio we see so commonly today, but with skill, passion and humility. Again, Gracious . And ungodly talented. May you rest in peace Mr. Smith - we are all made better people by your presence in the world. These are just a few of my favorite images That Dick Smith created
