After the initial 1742 performances in Dublin, Messiah was premiered in London at Covent Garden a year later amid much controversy over a Sacred Oratorio being presenting in a public venue. As a newspaper account at the time opined How will this appear to After-Ages, when it shall be read in History, that in such an Age the People of England were arrivd to such a Height of Impiety and Prophaneness, that most sacred Things were sufferd to be usd as public Diversions.
