After watching Black Hawk Down (more than twice), i have got really interested in understanding the failed state that Somalia has become.I got the opportunity to watch another motion picture production, 'The trouble with Pirates'.Its a massive documentary that tells the story of how the piracy stated as a response to the inversion of their coastline by big ships ( from the West) who stole the fish and damaged the waters through toxic dumping. However like any revolution or response , it got hijacked into a multi million dollar ratchet by war lords and businessman. Ship owners paid the ransom everytime n this fueled more hijackings , but one ship owner commented, "if your ship is hijacked , what do you do, you cant call 911?. Somalis , it turns love two things, that is , GOD and WAR. With no central government and lack of security, the piracy will roll on for a long time. Thats Africa, my motherland, the land of plenty; pregnant with possibilities yet poverty and famine constantly take the headlines.War, coups, beautiful scenery and massive mineral deposits including oil , characterize this giant , and democracy coughs in pain when it is brought to life in Africa, rigged elections and progressive democracies balances our political landscape. I am convinced there is more life in Africa than its problems, however it is unclear when this sleeping giant will wake up and embrace this.
