After watching this you will understand why I want to use certified organic wool. The treatment of sheep - in this case in Australia where most Merino wool comes from - is just horrible and if I imagine I knit this wool and wear it, I could just puke. I think that Peta does well in showing this cruel reality to make consumers think about their choices. Cause it is easy just to see the beautiful wool in the shop and to ignore the cruelty that might be behind it. A wool-free-winter is not an alternative though and does not make sense at all in my opinion, as wool is an amazing natural fibre with wonderful characteristics (campaignforwool.org/about-wool/). It is a great alternative to fibers like cotton, as the production of cotton needs too much water and soil. Furthermore it is important to use wool to preserve the different sheep-breeds and therefore the biodiversity and apart from that sheep are important for certain ecosystems, as they beware landscapes from desertification and so on. So in my opinion the question should not be wool or not wool. We need to ask the right questions: Where does my wool come from? How are the animals treated? How are workers treated? What is the impact on the environment? Are chemicals used to dye the wool? That leads to the question: what kind of wool do I (want to) use? Regional wool? For example the beautiful Beiroa yarn, which is spun from the fleece of Bordaleira sheep, who live in the Serra da Estrela, Portugals highest mountain range. Certified wool? If that wool is too rustic and you prefer a softer wool, there is still the oportunity to choose certified merino wool, which gives you the certainty that animals are not mistreated. For example Rosy Green Wool, which has the GOTS-certificate. Lets keep knitting, love sheep and work on alternatives for a better, sustainable and fair world! https://youtube/watch?v=FcGk6avqSbg
