Aga Khan University, Pakistan Specialist Introduction Aga Khan University invites applications for the position of Specialist. Reporting to the project managers and the Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) committee, s/he will be expected to carry out risk assessment of new projects during their planning, design, construction and commissioning phases and develop & implement mitigation measures in order to ensure environmental health, safety and social plan to address the grievance of the communities living nearby to the project sites. The incumbent will also be responsible to comply with local and international EHS standards as required. Responsibilities The incumbent will get the opportunity to work on exciting and creative projects of high-tech health care, research and educational buildings to ensure proper implementation of EHS standards during projects planning, design, construction and commissioning phases. Specifically s/he will be responsible to: Develop and implement EHS policies, procedures and social plan for the projects to ensure compliances with Local, International and funding agencies regulations i.e. The Agence Française de Développement (AFD) and Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC). Establish and manage social plans to address the grievances of communities living nearby to the project site. Coordinate with local agencies e.g. Sindh Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) to obtain no objection certification prior to commencement of works. Work with nursing staff, clinicians and Infection control team in order to conduct and perform 360 degree risk assessment during new project planning, construction and at commissioning stages including renovations and modification of facility. Provide guidance to engineering and maintenance team on EHS compliances and deliver ongoing training. Conduct Safety audits of construction sites and take preventive and corrective measures to ensure its implementation to minimize the risks and hazards. Evaluate EHS practices compliance at the construction site and guide AKU Project team, contractors and sub-contractors staff/workforce to improve EHS practices. Initiate safety violation tickets and impose penalties on the contractors depending on nature and intensity of violation while work in close coordination with EHS Manager. Provide technical support, professional advice and guidance to project teams on Occupational Health and Safety issues. Review tender documents and Bill of Quantities (BOQs) of each project and ensure that EHS requirements and related cost has included by the contractor in the bids. Sought written EHS process from the contractor(s) before awarding of contract. Represent as active member of Safety Committee and Project Management Team (PMT) and submit reports on weekly and monthly basis in the respective forums. Develop training plans, impart training to project team and provide special training to develop Master Trainers. Requirements Bachelor or Master degree in Engineering or Environmental Sciences. (Candidates with engineering background will be given preference). Minimum 5 years of related experience especially in EHS and Construction Projects. Well versed with Local and International EHS Standards including International Finance Corporation (IFC) requirements. Ability to conduct risk assessment of projects and mitigation measures. Good leadership and communication skills. Project as team player and efficient in managing EHS violations and mitigation measures. Ability to prepare reports independently.
