Again I ask a simple question. where did this ntuaja go for - TopicsExpress

Again I ask a simple question. where did this ntuaja go for decades. through out the 1980s and 90s women did it. then in the year 2000s it becomes illegal again? . i attended several burials of prominent Awka men of that era and it happened. no quarrels, no problem. Progressing or Retrogressing? meanwhile whenever this thing comes up the attacks against each other on this forum are so venomous that sometimes i find it difficult to even contribute. Now someone please and painstakingly explain the Ntu aja. Is it that the woman will die if she does it, or the mans soul wont rest? what exactly is the dust to dust as defined by Awka culture. and what is the repercussion that is so grave that people are so desperate and even willing to beat up priests to make sure it is not contravened?. No two pple have given me the same or even an intelligent (truth be said) explanation of what it is and its significance. Culture no matter how popular becomes draconian when foisted on people. Even if I for example support it and someone else doesnt, for whatever reason it is still the persons right. if his community are angry with him we dissociate ourselves from him obodo a Machie nye. But even storming another Ibo mans compound to force him to do the communitys will in itself isnt Ibo or Oka culture. we are not Hausa or Yoruba. Ibos by nature are Republican. As for the priest involved in this mess, he should be mature enough to know when to ease up and when to add pressure. You cannot pastor a community you are at loggerheads with. In as much as there was an accord as i have read here for 6 months to be given for Awka elders to meet, . what happens to the dead within that time. death doesnt send a postcard. are the bodies to remain in the mortuary till 6 months time?. I dare say that it is not everything we will accept today like it was centuries ago. we dont kill twins anymore do we? NO ONE can force me to go to the Imoka shrine and swear. if i go i will walk down there by myself ; NO SHAKING it remains my prerogative. what i dont understand is disruption of burials fighting etc. didnt the family have meetings before the burial day? If you agree as a family and say there wont be any Ntu aja and you tell the priest, he cant force it i believe. Also the fighting seems to start immediately anyone sets eyes on a priest at a burial. Even before the said action, or should Awka Catholics not bury their dead? i dont hear this at non catholic burials. so whats really up about this whole thing.
