Aggravate vs. Irritate Perhaps a police officer would best be able to explain the difference between these two words, as we most commonly hear the word "aggravate" in relation to "assault." Aggravate means "to make an already bad situation worse," and irritate means "to annoy." Nearly everyone is irritated (annoyed) about something when they commit an assault--only totally crazy people would assault someone without any provocation at all. If you are charged with aggravated assault (instead of simple assault), that means you made a bad situation--the fact that you were attacking someone--worse by using a weapon, rather than just your fists. Whiny, annoying people are irritating, not aggravating, though spending hours with them at work after having sat in traffic for an hour can aggravate your already bad mood.
