Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Minister, Ms Tina Joemat-Pettersson, the Minister of Science and Technology, Mr Derek Hanekom, Deputy Minister of Human Settlements, Mr Zou Kota, Deputy Minister of International Relations, Mr Marius Fransman, members of the Western Cape Legislature joined the Issel family in commemoration of the late fisheries freedom fighter, Johnny Issel, yesterday 02 February. The Department hosted a Pre State of the Nation Address event at the Swartklip Sports Centre in Mitchells Plain where government leaders and community members gathered to reflect on progress made and paid tribute and celebrate the life of Johnny Issel – a recipient of the Order of Luthuli back in 2007, a community activist and leader, a chief instigator against inequality, a non-racialist and a liberation struggle icon. A befitting tribute was delivered by the Honourable Minister of Science and Technology, Mr. Derek Hanekom in honuor of a humble servant of the people and one that played his part in advocating for equality in the fishing sector to increase meaningful access to more black fishers while being awake to the challenge of dwindling fish stocks. As the 20th birthday of the new South Africa draws near – it is becoming increasingly important that we remember our heroes and heroines that fought hard and long for the liberation of our people from the evil system of apartheid and – not only remember but capture the essence of their role and contribution during those trying times while protecting their legacies by serving our fellow countrymen and women justly. Long live! the spirit of Johnny Issel, long live! Lets keep Fishing for change.
