Agriculture and Nutrition Extension Programme (ANEP) is a three year EU funded project (2012-14), which contributed to Nepal’s agricultural revolution through food security and better livelihoods for 26,000 households in Nepal and was recently closed by EU Ambassador to Nepal Ms Rensje Teerink with support and ownership from the Government including the Ministry and Department of Agriculture, NARC, the Ministry of Women and Children and the Social Welfare Council. The total EU contribution for this project has been EUR 3,644,677. The EU has been not only a donor but an active partner since sustainable agriculture is one of the priorities for the EU in Nepal. Adequate child nutrition is an investment in the future, instrumental for cognitive development and healthy and productive lives. Food security is the basic necessity for decent lives. Enhanced agricultural productivity, finally, is needed to afford better livelihoods. ANEP has been implemented by iDE Nepal, and its contribution for the development of Nepal has been both successful as well as inspirational: Technology transfer for agricultural progress, and the involvement of private sector in it for delivery, creating also sustainability and efficiency has been one of the pillars of the project; ANEP has shown successful rural development goes beyond traditional agricultural development, for example, through the facilitation of market access; and apart from the private sector, ANEP has also guaranteed institutionalization, ownership and innovation by cooperating with both the national and district level government, as well as with research centres. The successful outcomes of ANEP will help on the approaches for the on-going EU funded Initiative for Agriculture Productivity and Commercialization (IAPAC) implemented by EU partner organizations ADRA and iDE.
