Ah! Fall is in the air and we know what that means. Basenji puppies! Public Service announcement for ALL potential puppy people. You are looking at the breed during an exciting time - we now have a genetic direct DNA test for one of our most serious and deadly diseases - fanconi as well as one type of PRA: basenji night blindness. When buying from a breeder make sure at least one parent is fanconi AND PRA clear via direct DNA (note: there is NO such thing as clear by parentage unless both parents are directly DNA tested as clear. NOTE: clear by parentage ONLY lasts formONE generation. Linkage marker tested as probable clear no longer cuts the mustard.) If breeders can not afford to test, they can not afford to breed and YOU, dear puppy person, can not afford emotionally or financially to purchase a basenji that could have health issues in the future. Preferably ALL parents should be DNA tested at the least. Do your own research to confirm at offa.org which is a public database of health testing. Please do NOT go online and purchase from folks advertising on such places as next day pets, puppyfind, petfind, etc. These are just people out looking to make money and could care less about the breed calling their puppies products and taking credit cards. Try not to make an emotional or impulse buy and stay clear of extremes (too rambunctious, too shy) - you want a well balanced puppy.
