Ahead of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence - TopicsExpress

Ahead of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, EEAS Director for Human Rights and Democratisation Mr Silvio Gonzato and his colleagues visited a project of the organizations Baladna and Kayan supported by the EU aiming at fighting crimes and violence against women belonging to the Arab community of Israel. Held in Nazareth, the workshop brought together a group of 15 women engaged in preventing violence against women in their communities. Reem, from the village of Al Mukeibla, explained how she started being active and voicing out her concerns thanks to the project. When I first came to the group, I felt many dilemmas because of the weight of the society and the environment. Once I only listened, but now I am talking. Gradually, things came out. Although we come from very different backgrounds, the group was a source of empowerment. Together, we can achieve things and fight not only concrete violence but also the exclusion and the marginalisation of women, a phenomenon which kills the souls of women. Reem, on the left of the attached picture, now volunteers at a rape crisis center and works as Snoezelen coordinator for persons with special needs.
