Ahh, the good old days ... the Fifties. I remember these photos from LIFE magazine. The one with circles of total destruction (30 June 1950) ... I remember my Mom and I, at 3 years old, going through the magazine like we usually did, sitting on the couch, she explaining the photos, and coming across this article. I never forgot that one. By the time of the color cover I could read. There was another that showed the effects over the entire country of H-Bombs hitting the coasts and Chicago. We were dead ducks. My sister Pat worked at Truax Air Field in Madison and told us, since we were a NORAD/SAC Headquarters, Madison was #7 on the priority list and MadTown would be totally annihilated in an attack. Every kid knew this was the black dog in the corner of his/her mind, Nuclear War. It was more than duck and cover; it was pervasive.
