Ahluwalia urges Centre to send expert team to encephalitis-affected areas Siliguri, 24 July: The BJP leadership today claimed that Darjeeling MP SS Ahluwalia has urged the Union health minister to send a team of experts from the health ministry to take stock of the situation in encephalitis-affected areas in north Bengal. BJP leaders in the region said a Central team would be arriving in Siliguri soon. State BJP general secretary, Biswapriya Roy Choudhury, said Mr Ahluwalia raised the encephalitis issue during Zero Hour in Parliament yesterday. “A Central team would be visiting here shortly. Mr Ahluwalia will be coming here on 26 July,” he said. Notably, BJP activists led by Mr Roy Choudhury visited Jalpaiguri district hospital and the north Bengal Medical College and Hospital today and interacted with health officials there on the arrangements being made to contain the encephalitis outbreak. “There were no proper arrangements for providing medical services to encephalitis patients in the NBMCH, and chief minister Mamata Banerjee, during her visit to Darjeeling, did not visit the NBMCH to make proper arrangements for the affected patients,” said Mr Roy Choudhury, adding, “Didi (CM) does not feel easy to seek assistance from the Centre to combat the encephalitis menace. But I have learnt that she would go to Delhi to meet the Prime Minister to save her face when Mr Narendra Modi asked the CBI to continue probe into the Saradha scam in Bengal.” According to Mr Roy Choudhury, Jalpaiguri district health officials have taken better precautionary measures to combat the encephalitis menace through awareness campaigns. “But there is no proper arrangement in the NBMCH due to lack of initiatives from the state government and the chief minister, who is also in charge of the health department. The NBMCH authorities have sufficient kits to carry out Japanese Encephalitis tests at present,” he added. The BJP has also criticised former state health minister Surya Kanta Mishra and said the health service management broke down during his tenure. sns
