Aiken Horse Park breaks ground, dedicates main field to horseman Bruce Duchossois AIKEN — The simple sign at Audubon Drive and Powderhouse Road in the city’s horse district doesn’t do justice to the big plans in store for the Aiken Horse Park. The sign for the park, which prominently includes “Home of Bruce’s Field,” went up recently as a groundbreaking ceremony was held at the site Nov. 8. Formerly known as Ford Conger Field and the home of the Aiken Steeplechase Association’s two annual events, the horse park is expected to hold those and a number of other equine events throughout the year. That’s just what Bruce Duchossois would have wanted. The horseman, who died July 2 after a long battle with esophageal cancer, was the driving force behind the park. In memory of Duchossois’ passion and commitment, the Aiken Horse Park Found­ation decided to name the main field “Bruce’s Field.” “The Aiken Horse Park is Bruce’s legacy and his incredible gift to the community that he loved,” longtime friend Jack Wetzel wrote. “We look forward to carrying out Bruce’s wonderful dream and we invite you to be a part of this new tradition in Aiken.” At the ceremony, the foundation laid out its capital improvement plans for the park.
