Air lingo - the fun we have up there! People of the Sky often have their own way of speaking too! We are not always formal people in neckties using holier than thou language. Sometimes Pilots, Cabin Crews and other airline staff use a fair amount of slanguage (slang language) just to have a little fun at work. Here’s a glossary of such interesting jargon terms that can help you decode what they’re saying 1. Air Boss - Head of the Air Department on board a flight; ruler of the flight deck. 2. Dead Heading - pilots flying as passengers. 3. Fangs Out - When a pilot is really hot for a dogfight (for military pilots) 4. Hangar Queen - An aircraft that suffers chronic downs; hangar queens are often cannibalized for parts to be used on other aircraft 5. Trolley Dollies - Flight attendants 6. Weekend warriors - Pilots who mostly fly on weekends 7. Go Juice - Jet fuel. 8. No Joy - Failure to make visual sighting; or inability to establish radio communications. 9. Whiskey Charlie - Who Cares? 10. Widow-maker – a fighter jet called an F-104 Starfighter. Widow-maker due to many accidents involving this aircraft. 11. Boredom Tube - slang synonym for a plane 12. Slam Dunk -Tactical Descent (steeper than normal visual approach) 13. Cattle/cargo - passengers at a low cost airline (if you dont like hauling passengers) 14. Blue juice: -The water in the lavatory toilet. “There no blue juice in the lav.” 15. Gate lice - The people who gather around the gate right before boarding so they can be the first on the plane. “Oh, the gate lice are thick today.” 16. Goodbye kiss: A pilots letter of resignation And the list goes on....... So here is the deal: We would really appreciate if you guys could dump some of your jargon and sayings as comments here with a brief explanation of what they mean. We guess such words could also be helpful as a pilots talk glossary for the newbies. Thanks a load!
