Airpower Discussion Of The Week - Answer: Is There Any Reason For A Christian To Practice Polygamy? It seems to me there is no place for polygamy in the Bible. One day, some people approached Jesus and asked him his view on divorce because they claimed it was permitted under the Old Testament. I want us to examine Jesus answer from which we can learn useful lessons. And the Pharisees came to him, and asked him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife?, tempting him. And he answered and said unto them, What did Moses command you? And they said, Moses suffered to write a bill of divorcement, and to put her away. And Jesus answered and said unto them, For the hardness of your heart he wrote you this precept. But from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female. For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and cleave to his wife; And they twain shall be one flesh:so then they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder. Mark 10:2-9 I want us it examine this scripture in detail. 1. The Old Testament marital arrangement is not a reflection of Gods standard of marriage. Jesus said it was given because of the hardness of mans heart and not because it was the will of God. God allowed them to have certain marital arrangements which were not aligned to his will. This included polygamy, concubines etc. 2. The light or knowledge available to them concerning marriage was limited. Gods judgment of things is also based on the light or knowledge available to a person But we are sure that the judgment of God is according to truth against them which commit such things. Romans 2:2 Because of this ignorance, God can wink or temporarily overlook a flaw. And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent. Acts 17:30 3. The standard of marriage, which is a reflection of Gods plan concerning marriage, is the marriage of Adam and Eve. Jesus cited their marriage as the standard of marriage and Adam did not practice polygamy. 4. Jesus is greater than Moses so his words supersede the words of Moses. Finally if you are contemplating polygamy, check your heart not your doctrine because you may have developed a hardened heart. Blessings!
