Airship USS Macon Landing At Moffett Field. 1933. The US NAVY airship USS Macon (ZRS-5) was built at the Goodyear Airdock in Akron, Ohio, by the Goodyear-Zeppelin Corporation. The airship was named after the city of Macon, Georgia, which was the largest city in the Congressional district of Representative Carl Vinson, then chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Naval Affairs. In service for less than two years, in 1935 Macon was damaged in a storm and lost off Californias Big Sur coast, though most of the crew was saved. The wreckage is listed as USS Macon Airship Remains on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. A very unique landing view of the Zeppelin shown here at the airfield later named Moffett Field, in Santa Clara County, Calif.
