Airtel Rising Stars 2013 ends. The 2013 edition of Airtel’s youth football development programme, Airtel Rising Stars came to a close over the weekend with the boys’ team from the Central Region and the girl’s team from the Ashanti Region emerging victors. The two garnered the most points at the National Finals played in a league format at the Liberty Park at Dansoman. For their prizes, the champions received gold medals, a trophy, souvenirs from Airtel, a cash prize of GHC 2000 and an opportunity to represent Ghana at the Airtel inter-country tournament to be played in Lagos, Nigeria in September. Other finalists in this year’s finals were the Northern Region’s girl’s team, the Upper West Region’s boys’ team and the Greater Accra boys’ team Airtel Rising Stars is a sports talent initiative introduced by Airtel that seeks to discover and nurture talented under 17 years male and female footballers who otherwise would have gone unnoticed and untapped. The initiative runs in all 17 Airtel operations across Africa and seeks to bring to light the skills of these young and talented ones by giving them the platform to become world class football stars. Addressing the closing ceremony, the Managing Director of Airtel Ghana, Philip Sowah said the success of ARS has been due to the collective efforts of various stakeholders including the National Juvenile Committee of the Ghana Football Association, the Ministries of Education and Youth and Sports, Samsung who have partnered with Airtel over the years. “We are thrilled with helping to grow football from the grassroots level and to see these players mature into players that Ghana can make use of”, Mr. Sowah said. President of the Ghana Football Association, Kwesi Nyantakyi commended Airtel Ghana for its contribution to youth football. He said the Airtel Rising Stars programme has offered the FA a good opportunity to unearth football talents for the U-17 and U-20 national teams, adding that the FA will continue to use the Rising Stars programme to raise talent. In attendance at the finals were the Greater Accra Regional Minister Julius Debrah, ARS Ambassadors Nii Odartey Lamptey and Sammy Kufuor, Airtel brand icon EL, and coaches from the GFA including Ibrahim Sunday and Oti-Akenten.
