Ajax Cape Town 1-0 Free State Stars by Paul Giess on October 24, 2013 in View from the Stands This was a desperately needed three points that will hopefully kick start the season for AjaxCT. There were moments of tension as the home side hung onto their single goal lead throughout the second half but there were also plenty of moments of good football to savour. AjaxCT looked particularly strong in midfield with Mobara having another good game since his step up to the first team and Paulse put in a hard working performance to lead the forward line. The winning goal came early in the game after a bright start from Ajax. Telinho had already made a few runs at the Stars defence before his goal after a quarter of an hour. He made space for himself in the box and for a split second looked to hesitate before driving a low shot in at the near post. The Mozambican winger is clearly going to cause a few sides problems this season and already looks a better fir in the side than last season experiment with the Brazilian, Wanderson. With the confidence of an early goal behind them Ajax took the game to the visitors. Manyama and Paulse could have added to the scoreline in the first half, with fast paced attacks coming down both wings. But there were also moments for Free State Stars as well with new goalkeeper Anssi Jaakkola looking hesitant at times. They really should have equalized when Thapelo Mkhatshwa’s header was directed straight into the keeper’s hands. The second half saw the visitors have most of the possession but the Ajax defence held steady and prevented any serious goal scoring chances. AjaxCT themselves were restricted to long range efforts but both Manyama and Lance Davids were way off target. The home fans managed to create enough noise to get the players through an especially nervy injury time that saw Free State Stars win a dangerous free kick in the 95th minute. Play broke down however, and the referees whistle confirmed a crucial victory. It was not a classic but it was exactly what was needed. A win, a clean sheet and good performances in all areas of the field. It is also encouraging to see a strong bench that allows the quality of Lance Davids and Eleazar Rogers to come on and strengthen the side late in the game. With quality such as Dolly, Travis and Losper still to come we wake up this morning with genuine optimism.
