Al Spangle Challenged me to this. since it doesnt involve pouring cold water on my head, I thought I would have a go. Heres the rules: in your status, list 10 books that have stayed with you in some way. Dont take more than a few minutes and do not think too hard about how this list makes you look! Tag 10 friends including me so I can see your list. Joe Monticello, Christy Chason Lavelle, Al Rowell, Britt Rodgers Bugby, Nathaniel Johnstone, Kate McKnight, Davis Petterson Jana Smith Corbett Christa McNutt Bridget Wishart (I think this part was harder than the books.) Since many of these are multi-volume, I count series a single books. Otherwise I would be finished with my first. (these are in order I thought of them) 1. Carlos Castaneda- The entire series EXCEPT Magical Passes and Wheel of time. When I was a teen, my brother was worried that I would disappear into the desert, do cactus and look for the eagle. He had good reason. I left those two books off b/c they are a book of quotes and an exercises book. Not very inspiring. I still love the series. 2. J.K. Rowling Harry Potter- Kids books? Brilliant kids books. I expected very little from them the first time i read them. I was blown away. 3. Nicolas Slonimsky- Lexicon of musical invective. Ever feel bad about yourself as a musician? Read this. You will feel better. This book helped my get through my Masters Degree. 4. Timothy Gallwey The Inner Game of Tennis- These books helped me conquer my fear of public performance. There is an inner game of music, I prefer the tennis one. 5. Milt Hinton- Over Time/ Playing The Changes/ Bass Line- Milt is one of my favorite bassists. His books are a history lesson filled with great stories and photographs that he took during his life. They give great insight into jazz and American history. 6. Tony Levin Official Page- Beyond the bass clef- another of my favorite bassists. This book has great stories chronicling his career. He has played with so many amazing musicians. 7. Oscar Zimmerman- Complete bass parts series. OK, this is all music, but it was essential to my music education. Complete works of Mahler, Beethoven selected Mozart, the Strauss tone Poems. I still use them frequently. I had to re-buy Beethoven because I used it so much the pages were falling out. 8. Kevin Casseday- Six Week Warmup For Double Bass. (AKA Swamp Dog) These warmups haunted me throughout my Masters degree. Professor Casseday was working on his book and I was his guinea pig. 9. Ludwig Streicher. Mein Musizieren auf dem kontrbas. This was the workbooks of my bachelors. I started playing upright using this method. I caught a lot of flack about that foot thing. His style in engrained into my muscle memory. 10. Mario Puzo- Fools Die. The first book I enjoyed reading. Sorry the tags stopped. I guess I did too many. :)
