Alas (and in an indication of an extremely unfortunate turn in priorities in recent years), I note that collection was not one of the criteria for libraries receiving this distinction. Henrico, which once had one of the best collections in the state, could not conceivably win an award nowadays in which this once-essential staple of a quality library system played a part, unless perhaps for the hyper-aggressive and seemingly unthinking weeding thereof. Such honors, unfortunately, will only encourage its brain trust to continue their present short-sighted policies. Too bad.
