Alayna was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes in April of 2009 at the age of 6 years old. She is now 10 years old and has been fighting this disease for 4 years now, and will continue to fight it for the rest of her life. This disease is completely life altering for Alayna and her family. We take for granted simple things like being able to sleep throught the night. Alaynas parents have to wake up every 2-3 hours to poke her, yet again, with a needle to test her sugar. A 10 year old girl that cannot leave her house and must have with her at all times a insulin pump, which is attached to her body at all times, blood glucose meter to check her levels before every meal and between, and an emergency bag filled with things to correct her sugar levels if it gets too low or high. It is overwhelming and there is currently no cure for this disease. There is a difference between Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes. Type 1 diabetes you develop as a child and will have it for the rest of your life. It also means that your pancreas does not produce any insulin to regulate your blood glucose levels. YOUR BODY MUST HAVE INSULIN TO SURVIVE! I will post more on this subject later. Recently Alayna was shopping and came across a lady with a medical alert dog that had been specifically trained to detect changes in blood glucose levels. This dog alerted the owner of something being wrong while Alayna was talking to her. They both checked their blood glucose and discovered it was Alaynas sugar dropping quickly. Because of that dog Alayna was able to correct her levels before she had any negative symptoms. This was such an amazing thing to see and hear about, that we did research and found the trainer who had trained that dog so well. She was about to pick up puppies to train when we called her. We have a puppy on reserve for Alayna, but the cost of the Diabetic Medical Alert Dog is very high. We need any and all help we can get to raise money for this dog. This dog will give Alayna and her family some peace of mind as she begins to become more independent. This dog can save her life, because it alerts her 20-30 minutes before her glucose levels drop to dangerously low levels. These low levels can actually cause Alayna to go into a diabetic coma. A very recent event where Alayna was found on the floor could not talk, did not know where she was or how she got there is an example of what can happen when your sugar drops, and it can happen in a second. If this would have happened in the middle of the night, and noone were to see her, the outcome could have been very tragic. If Alayna has a Medical Alert dog in her home with her, she will never have to go through that. This dog will be with her at all times day and night every where she goes, never leaving her side. Her parents will not have to worry as much, because the dog will be by Alaynas side at all times ready to alert her of any sudden changes. This dog will be able to wake her parents up if it is not able to get a response from Alayna. It takes anywhere from 9-12 months to train this dog, and we only have 8-10 months to raise the money for Alayna to get this dog. The cost of the dog is $20,000.00, this is very high, but when you consider the trainer must keep this dog and perform constant training for that time period. When all this is done, This dog will be united with Alayna and NEVER leave her side. Since this dog could save her life one day, we would greatly appreciate any help you would be willing to give us. We have set up an account at First National Bank of Eastern Arkansas (Forrest City) for Alayna Barnes Benefit Fund. Pleas help us get Alayna this dog. We will be posting pictures of the dog and updates as we get them throughout the whole training process.
