Alexander Saywack was a general provision merchant and the first East Indian business on the Strand, a business that lasted from 1865 to 1965. The premises were let to Duncan Dow, then S.G. Wiltshire, J.P. Santos, and Wieting and Richter. A gas station also operated on the premises. Hughes and Company, established in 1878, were Chemists and Druggists on the Strand. By the late 1800’s, T. Mooksang was probably the wealthiest Chinese businessman in the town. His daughter Maylene Mook-Sang got married to Eric Williams, the first Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago. A leading lady on the Strand in the 1880’s was Margaret Burns. She and her Irish husband owned one of the finest stores on the Strand. They were the first to install plated glass windows on their premises. She was a lady with style, on occasion strutting down the Strand, dressed in black silk with a bunch of plantains in her hand. Other businesses on the Strand were Wieting and Richter and their Ice Factory, Brodie and Rainer, C.V. Menzies, Pestano’s Foundry, Barry’s Workshop, Dumin’s Ice Factory, Mr. Wintz’s Boarding House, E.R. Jansan – Commission and Real Estate Agent, and Rodrigues Funeral Home, which later became D.M. Fernandes in the 40’s.
