Alhamdulillah was blessed to have spent a good few hours with Mufti Abu Layth this evening. From our wide ranging discussions I share with you a few lessons that I have taken, Our Deen is vast and very diverse. It is not a set of dos and donts. It gives us a framework by which to live. It teaches us how to live, it does not command us to be the moral police. It does however instruct us to command the good and forbid the evil and the best way to do this is by studying the Seerah of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wassalam. Never read the Prophet (saw) condescending, dismissive or judgemental. He (saw) spoke to people at their level and understood them from their perspective. Our Deen is not one that guilt trips us into practicing it, or appearing to do so. We do not have feel bad or grovel in public to have a sense of Emaan. Emaan is between us and Allah (swt) and is a reflection of how we conduct ourselves when we are in alone and Allah is watching. The Deen is not one of rigidly following a few rituals. It is an embracing Deen, it accommodates all people in the way that Allah (swt) has ordained. The Prophetic Dawah was not one of refutations, aggressive debates or stern telling offs. Yes the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wassalam was stern when he gave warnings to his Ummah, but he wasnt like that at all times. We live in a time where many Muslims are leaving the Deen because we have a small minority of us who make the Deen seem so difficult and lifeless that the majority of people do not want anything to do with it. This is particularly sad because our Deen is one of Rahmah (mercy). We as Muslims hate too much to the point where it seems as if we cannot tolerate anyone else yet we expect the non-Muslims to tolerate us and our beliefs that are against the very fundamentals of their society. We live in a bubble and when it bursts we will come to realise that we have failed not only ourselves but the communities in which we live. And finally, with regards to the recent press coverage and allegations against Mufti, there are always two sides to the stories if not more and sometimes the story isnt so black and white and there is a lot going on behind the scenes that we will not be aware off. Let us ensure that we do not jump on stories to score cheap points against our fellow Muslims.
