Alice Joyce Holmes Caine was born June 24, 1927 and passed away on November 8, 2014 in Kansas City, MO. She was born in Aurora, Illinois to Calvin Eugene and Essie Louise Glossop Holmes. She graduated from East Aurora High School and North Central College in Naperville, Illinois, commuting there daily on the CB&Q Railroad. Later courses were attended at Gonzaga Law School in Spokane, Washington and Kansas State University in Manhattan, KS. She met Homer Dodge Caine, Jr. (Bud) while working at ABC in Chicago, IL. He was a musician, working on the 43rd floor of the Opera Building and Alice was a secretary on the 16th floor. They met at a Christmas party held on the 25th floor. They had three children: Candace Louise Rouse, (Thomas Jonathon) of Ellicott City, MD; Homer Dodge “Tracy” Caine III (Ann Peterson Caine) of Stillwater, OK and Veronica Joyce Caine of Kansas City, MO; six grandchildren: Angela Nudson, Eric Nudson, Lena Nudson Benash (Anthony), Benjamin Holub, Laura Caine Steen (Connor), Christopher Caine; and two great-grandchildren, Anthony Jordan Benash and Abigail Joyce Benash. Alice loved God, her country and her family. She volunteered at churches and hospitals, with the American Heart Association, Riley County Historical Society and was a 4-H leader and a Girl Scout leader. Her work experience included positions at the Thor Pneumatic Tool Plant during WWII, telephone operator, secretary and an accountant at Kansas State University Animal Science Department. She was a member of Zeta Master Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi and the quilting group at Will Rogers Senior Center in Oklahoma City, OK. She loved to act and was in plays in Aurora, IL; Spokane, Wash.; Naperville, IL; Stockton, CA; Manhattan, KS; and at Will Rogers Senior Center in Oklahoma City. One brother, Warren Holmes of Ashton, Ill survives. Alice was preceded in death by her husband, Homer Dodge Caine, Jr (Bud) in 2001, both parents, brothers Robert, Donald, and Gerald; and sister, Ruth Mary. She will be cremated, with services to be held at All Souls’ Episcopal Church in Oklahoma City, on Friday, November 14th at 1 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in her name to The Salvation Army, The Riley County (KS) Historical Society or VITAS Inpatient Hospice Unit at Research Medical Center in Kansas City MO. May she rest in peace and God be with us all until we meet again.
