Alice Munro. Recipient of the 2013 Nobel Prize in Literature. Pride of Huron County. In the early 1990’s I worked for an architecture firm in Goderich Ontario, an isolated small town on the shore of Lake Huron. Occasionally, Alice Munro, who lived in Clinton, a neighbouring small town, would visit the Park Tavern where we would lunch. In south-western Ontario, citizens are very modest, unassuming and not prone to being impressed. Whenever Alice entered the pub, people made a conscious effort not to look at her, nobody would stare. But everybody knew she was there. She was the rock star of Huron County. With a contagious smile and her fabulous shock of thick white hair, she had a quiet charisma that filled the room. While we munched on our burgers and sipped our beers you could just feel everyone in the room begin to well up, straighten their collars and be proud as hell to be in the same room as her. It was almost like everyone was saying, “See, we’re as good as anybody else out there. We have Alice Munro.”
