Alice Nash, Professor of History at the University of Massachusetts, wrote this today: Dear Students, In 1965 my White father, born and raised in Springfield, Massachusetts, told my mother that he had to go to Alabama to March with Dr. Martin Luther King. This is a world historical moment, he said. Whoever can support Dr. King, must go. He needed all the cash on hand to make the trip so our best friends and neighbors - anti-union Republicans who loved us anyway - invited us over for hot dogs. I was six years old. The news coverage was both awe- and fear-inspiring. On the last night, my father was part of a dinner group that included Viola Liuzzo, a White woman from Detroit, also with young children at home. While he was on the bus back to NJ, Liuzzo was murdered by the KKK. We are living in another historical moment when your voice and public, non-violent action can make a difference. To encourage you to attend the rally today at the Student Union, I will dismiss class at 12:50.
