All-County Girls Swimming/Diving: This season, Eagles rule the pool (Credit Racine JT) This year saw a flip in the lineup on the All-Racine County Girls Swimming and Diving first team. Last year, Burlington Co-op led the way with seven of the 12 first-team spots and Case had three. This season, Case dominated with nine first-team entries, led again by All-County Athlete of the Year Cassidy Bose. Repeat performer Emily Bollendorf and teammates Emelia Selky, Meredith Freidheim and Kayla Rose round out the Eagles’ crew. Burlington Co-op had the other three first-team selections, led by first-team repeaters Olivia Wanasek, DeAnn Jones and Samantha Dziak. Devon Wanasek rounds out the Burlington contingent. Here are capsule looks at the first-team selections: Cassidy Bose SCHOOL: Case GRADE: Senior FIRST-TEAM EVENT: Diving AWARDS, HONORS: All-American, Academic All-American, All-State first team, Academic All-State, first-team All-Southeast Conference, two-time All-County Athlete of the Year. NOTABLE: Finished second in diving behind Hazel Hertting of Neenah for second straight year at WIAA State Championships in Madison; scored 531.40 points, which surpassed the previous state record; at the Pirate Invitational at Port Washington, Bose scored 477.25 to break the city record of 471.40 set in 2011 by former Park standout and Division 1 state champion Rachel Margis; also broke her own school record and the pool record despite hitting the board on her last dive; at the Cedarburg Invitational Oct. 4, raised city record to 499.20; surpassed the 500-point mark at the West Bend Diving Invitational with a score of 507.90, finishing second to Hertting; set SEC 11-dive record with score of 474.35; set city record of 546.10 at the WIAA Division 1 Greenfield Sectional to advance to state meet for fourth straight year; set city and school 6-dive record of 304.60 in an SEC dual meet against Oak Creek. COLLEGE: Bose has signed a letter of intent to compete for Boise State University. She plans to study exercise science and hopes to be a physical therapist. QUOTABLE: “Cassidy came in her freshman year with a natural athletic ability,” Case coach Frank Michalowski said. “She quickly developed her natural talent for the sport of diving. We are proud of her and her accomplishments these past four years.” Emily Bollendorf SCHOOL: Case GRADE: Sophomore FIRST-TEAM EVENTS: 50-yard freestyle, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle relay, 400 freestyle relay AWARDS, HONORS: All-State in 100 butterfly with time of 57.20 at WIAA Division 1 Greenfield Sectional; first-team All-Southeast Conference in 50 freestyle, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle relay, second team in 400 freestyle relay; second straight year on All-County first team. NOTABLE: Won butterfly at SEC Meet with time of 57.91 to break the city record of 58.34 set by Horlick’s Carina Tennessen in 1996 and break the school record of 58.41 set by Chris DeKraay in 1982; lowered her record to 57.20 at the sectional to win the race, set a Greenfield pool record; was the only county swimming qualifier for the WIAA state meet; finished ninth at state in 57.78; had season-best time of 25.31 in the 50 freestyle at the sectional meet; anchored the first-team 200 freestyle relay (best time 1:41.55 at the sectional) and 400 freestyle relay (best time 3:46.88 at SEC Meet); didn’t lose a butterfly race until the state meet; helped set meet records in the 300 breaststroke and 300 butterfly relays at the SEC Relays and four records at the Beloit Invitational; was named the Eagles’ Swimmer of the Year by her teammates for the second straight year. QUOTABLE: “Emily had a breakout sophomore season,” Case coach Frank Michalowski said. “I’m looking forward into her junior year and the team has high expectations for her continued success.” Meredith Freidheim SCHOOL: Case GRADE: Junior FIRST-TEAM EVENTS: 200 individual medley, 100 breaststroke, 200 freestyle relay, 400 freestyle relay AWARDS, HONORS: First-team All-Southeast Conference in 200 freestyle relay, second team All-SEC in breaststroke and 400 freestyle relay. NOTABLE: Set school record in the breaststroke at the sectional meet with a time of 1:09.04, breaking the mark of 1:09.45 set by Kelli Klepel in 2000; helped Eagles set 300 breaststroke and 300 butterfly relay records at the SEC Relays and three records at the Beloit Invitational; had best time in 200 IM of 2:16.83 at the sectional; had relay splits of 25.50 in the 200 freestyle relay at the sectional and 55.76 in the 400 freestyle relay at the SEC Meet. QUOTABLE: “Meredith quite simply came out of nowhere this season,” Case coach Frank Michalowski said. “With her determination, strong work ethic and off season training, I am looking forward to her senior season.” Kayla Rose SCHOOL: Case GRADE: Freshman FIRST-TEAM EVENTS: 200 freestyle relay, 400 freestyle relay AWARDS, HONORS: First-team All-Southeast Conference in 200 freestyle relay, second-team All-SLC in 400 freestyle relay; voted Most Valuable Relay Swimmer by her peers. NOTABLE: Helped Eagles set record in 850 crescendo relay at the SEC Relays and two records at the Beloit Invitational. QUOTABLE: “Kayla constantly worked on the areas she needed to improve in,” Case coach Frank Michalowski said. “To me that is the mark of a swimmer who has high aspirations to take her high school swimming career to another level. What is most impressive about her, though, is her commitment to team over self and her genuine desire to improve.” Emelia Smooth Selky SCHOOL: Case GRADE: Sophomore FIRST-TEAM EVENTS: 200 freestyle, 100 freestyle, 200 freestyle relay, 400 freestyle relay AWARDS, HONORS: First-team All-Southeast Conference in 200 freestyle relay, second-team All-SLC in 200 freestyle and 400 freestyle relay, third-team All-SEC in 500 freestyle. NOTABLE: Helped Eagles set records in the 300 butterfly and 850 crescendo relays at the SLC Relays and three records at the Beloit Invitational; had best time in 200 freestyle of 1:58.85 and best time in 100 freestyle of 56.49 on the leadoff leg of the 400 freestyle relay, both at the sectional; voted Freestyler of the Year by her peers.
