All black people do not have roots in Africa. Caucasians gave us the title African-American to further distinguish us from them. You dont hear Caucasians refer to themselves as European-American, nor have you ever heard the titles Mexican-American, Asian-American, Japanese-American, Chinese-American, Puerto Rican-American, or Dominican-American. The list could go on. You have also never in your life seen any of these titles listed on a questionnaire/survey, a job application, or anything else that asks what your race/nationality is. Being African-American would imply that you have parents directly from Africa, or are from Africa and/or have dual-citizenship. I, among many others, will not allow myself to be labeled a name given to me by the oppressor. Weve been niggers, colored, black, and then African-American. I am not denouncing my culture or my people, but I am setting the record straight. Its those who say dumb shit like Im not black, Im light-skinned or Im not black, Im brown-skinned that are the real problem and need a reality check.
